Robert Stephens and Judith Owens were married in probably Pickens County, South Carolina about 1838. They had 10 children. Go here for a listing of the children.

A study of birth places of Robert and Judith’s children in the 1860 U.S. census for Pickens County, SC shows that the family moved to Georgia about 1850, but then moved back to Pickens County before 1860 where most likely Robert and Judith died.

Most of the children remained in the Pickens, Anderson, and Oconee County areas of South Carolina, and many of their descendants still live in the area today. We have located living descendants of Robert and Judith Stephens' son William M. Stephens, but no descendants of the other children who remained in South Carolina. We know that two of the children moved to neighboring states.

One son Wiley Stephens and his wife Nancy Adoline Strain and newborn son Wade Andrew moved to Dalton, GA (Whitfield County) about 1869/1870. The family later moved to the Carbondale/Redwine Cove area of Whitfield County where another son Charlie Henry was born. Both sons raised large families. All three families eventually moved to Adairsville, GA (Bartow County), with the exception of Wade Andrew's daughter Zula. Zula married Walter M. Redwine and remained in "the cove." Some of their descendants still live in the area. Descendants of the Adairsville families can be found throughout Georgia and several other states.

Another son Henry Nathan Stephens and his wife Georgia and daughter Mary moved to Chattanooga, TN (Hamilton County) sometime after 1880. The family ran a restaurant and market in Chattanooga. Mary Stephens married Samuel Franklin Fritts. We have not been able to locate any living Fritts family descendants of Henry and Georgia Stephens.
