Frederick Thomas Burnett, Sr. first appears by name in public record in Rutherford Co., NC. where his marriage bond to Peggy Null (Neill)was recorded on Apr. 14, 1795, with bondsman John Gwaltney and witness Richard Lewis. Margaret Null, daughter of Philip and Margaret Beauchamp Null, was born Apr. 22, 1780 in Lincoln Co., NC. Tradition has it that Margaret, not quite 15 years old, and Frederick, 25 years old, ran away to be married. This seems to be evidenced by the fact that they were married in Rutherford Co., NC.

Unaccountably, Frederick and Margaret Null Burnett are not listed in the U.S. Census report for 1830 in Buncombe or Macon Co., NC. They are not listed with any of their children, so it seems possible that for some reason they were still in Buncombe Co., but were missed by the Census taker. Eldridge, John and Margaret Shope, Frederick Burnett, Jr., Judie and Nicholas Shope, and John Burnett were all in Buncombe Co. Ibbie and Jacob Shope were in Macon Co. Henry had died. Philip and Clarissa were staying with their brother, Eldridge. Frederick and Margaret Burnett never appear together in any census thereafter.
